A trip to the legendary Parathe-wali Gali in Old Delhi

If you want to enjoy Delhi then you just have to walk its small by-lanes. This is where the magic of India really is. I understand site-seeing is an integral part of any visit but Delhi is different. You don’t just do site-seeing, you experience the place.

The “Parathe Wale Gali” is one such place. It literally means “The Paratha Lane” or the “by-lane of fried bread” is situated in the famous Chandni Chowk area of Delhi. These “parathas” are strictly vegetarian and has no onions or garlic. A real treat if you ask me. One of the shops is so famous that even the Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru (the first prime minister of India) have visited – how cool is that!

Here’s a great video on the Parathe Wale Gali. A must watch if you are going to Delhi and certainly not to miss if you are a foodie. You’ll love it!

Just make sure you come to Delhi hungry. If you are really concerned about getting the dreaded “Delhi Belly” (and believe me, it will happen), then have your dysentery, hepatitis A (here’s a drinking water buying guide) and cholera jabs before you land in India.

Please note that the nearest metro station is Chandni Chowk and while you are there don’t forget to eat “jalebis” at the Old Famous Jalebi Wala shop. But remember, a walk in these lanes is not for the faint hearted –  it’s very crowded. Meanwhile if you love jewellery then you must visit the jewellery shops at “Dariba Kalan”, an old 17th-century street in Chandni Chowk.
